Description:

The purpose of this paper is to describe a new method for optimizing the design of urban storm sewer systems. Previous efforts to optimize gravity sewers have met with limited success because classical optimization methods require that the problem be well behaved, e.g. describable by continuous, convex functions. The vertical alignment design problem is defined by a set of discrete pipe diameters and costs, excavation costs as a function of soil type, and a pre-defined horizontal arrangement of pipes and manholes for a gravity sewer. Genetic algorithms are used in place of classical techniques to arrive at the least-cost solution for a specified design storm. an example is presented to illustrate the technique.
