VOC SOURCE PROFILE MEASUREMENTS
Impact/Purpose:
(1) To provide up-to-date VOC source profiles for EPA's revitalized SPECIATE source profile library, through gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of "samples of opportunity" acquired in HEASD-supported field studies.
(2) To provide VOC measurement support to HEASD-sponsored field studies.
Description:
The primary work under this task is to generate VOC source profiles by GC-FID/MS measurements on samples collected in HEASD-supported field studies. Such profiles are crucial data for source apportionment work in both receptor- and emissions-based modeling. OAQPS has recently committed to a multi-year revitalization of EPA's source profile library (SPECIATE), and ORD partners in this effort are expected to be active contributors to SPECIATE, by reporting results acquired in various ORD-supported field studies that were carried out with objectives other than SPECIATE enhancement. A secondary activity under this task is to provide VOC measurement support to various HEASD-sponsored field studies.

Progress
:Prior to FY05 this task was concerned with a range of ozone-related source apportionment activities including receptor model development, radiocarbon measurements on both VOC and PM ambient samples, and measurement of VOC source profiles. Beginning in FY05 this task has been narrowed to only the last activity, with radiocarbon and model development work (and their planned products) transferred to a new task and task 15099, respectively.
Relevance
:The availability of up-to-date VOC source profiles is a crucial need for source apportionment modeling, for both receptor- and emissions-based models. Receptor models require source profiles to infer the contributions that sources make to measured ambient air concentrations. Emissions-based air quality simulation models require source profiles to speciate the total VOC emission rates of the emissions inventory input data used in these models. The woefully inadequate state of EPA's source profile library (SPECIATE) has long been of concern within and outside the Agency. Beginning in FY04 however OAQPS has committed substantial multi-year funding to update the SPECIATE database, by adding the profiles of new sources and updating old ones. This is being done under an OAQPS/NRMRL/NERL advisory committee chaired by David Mobley. There is the expectation that the ORD partners will be active contributors to SPECIATE data, from measurements acquired in various ORD-supported field studies that were/are carried out with objectives other than SPECIATE enhancement. In FY04 HEASD began to provide VOC source profiles from past measurements to the SPECIATE contractor. This task will allow this activity to continue, exploiting results from HEASD field studies that will occur in FY05 and FY06.
