CMAQ VERSION OF PM CHEMISTRY MODEL

Impact/Purpose:

1. Conduct laboratory studies with scientists from Caltech, the University of Antwerp, and the NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory to improve treatments of SOA Chemistry and N2O5 chemistry in CMAQ.

2. Analyze ambient PM2.5 samples in Research Triangle Park, NC, Detroit, MI and Pasadena, CA and when available compare field data with CMAQ predictions obtained from AMD.

3. In 2005 recommend improvements to AMD for the treatment of SOA chemistry in CMAQ.

4. By the end of FY06, deliver an improved SOA chemistry model to AMD who will incorporate the model into CMAQ.

5. By the end of 2007, deliver an improved N2O5 chemistry model to AMD who will incorporate the model into CMAQ.

Description:

PM chemistry models containing detailed treatments of key chemical processes controlling ambient concentrations of compounds in PM2.5 are needed to develop strategies for reducing PM2.5 concentrations. Specific activities to be carried out under this task include (1) in 2005 recommend improvements to the current SOA chemistry model in CMAQ; (2) conduct laboratory experiments with scientists at University of Antwerp and Caltech to improve the SOA chemistry model in CMAQ; (3) analyze the polar organic fraction of field samples collected in Research Triangle Park, NC, Detroit, MI, and Pasadena, CA and compare the results with CMAQ predictions obtained from AMD; and (5) carry out joint laboratory research studies with the NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory to develop an improved N2O5 chemistry model for CMAQ. The improved CMAQ version of the PM Chemistry Model will be used by AMD to carry out modeling studies for OAQPS.
