ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE NO/VOC AUTOMOTIVE COATINGS/PREVENTION AND CONTROLS OF VOCS - PHASE I

Description:

Automotive paints provide reasonable protection against the elements but release substantial amounts of dangerous volatile organic components (VOCs) to the atmosphere during application. Foster-Miller proposes to extend their successful development of No VOC aircraft coatings to a new class of No VOC automotive coating that meets/exceeds the performance of currently used, solvent based polyurethane coatings while being environmentally compliant and more economical. Their technical approach combines three enabling technologies to produce an innovative, one part No VOC coating system that is ideal for automobiles, ships, aircraft and other industrial applications. These key technologies include reactive polyester and polyamide oligomers, air drying coatings and engineered release gels. When applied to automobiles as a low viscosity, one part spray coating, their environmentally safe coating (ESC) should release No VOC and should air dry at room temperature, forming a tough, durable cured coating. This feature should protect the coating crew and the atmosphere from exposure to toxic, hazardous vapors and eliminate problems usually associated with improperly formulated coatings. In Phase I, they will develop the ESC formulation, produce coated test panels and analyze test panels for key performance properties.
