Agents that may affect reproductive and developmental toxicity are of great concern to the general public. espite this, both the regulatory and public health arenas have been made somewhat haphazard use of the existing data when interpreting these health effects. ppropriate information is often unavailable to lay citizens, and even when it is, may be interpreted very differently by regulators, public health officials, physicians, or others. n December 1989, the Institute for Evaluating Health Risks (IEHR) convened an ad hoc group of scientists to discuss the evaluation of chemicals for their potential reproductive or developmental toxicity. he group agreed that there was a clear need for an evaluation process and found, a strong consensus on many elements that should be incorporated into such a process. orking with the results of this meeting, IEHR succeeded in securing a balanced source of funding, and through an iterative committee developed this document, "The Evaluative Process for Determining Human Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity of Agents". he Evaluative Process represents scientific consensus among individuals from regulatory, industrial, and academic sectors and calls for the systematic application of knowledge and judgement in a practical, open, and informative manner.
