Description:

Chlorofluorocarbon 113 (1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane) has little potential to cause direct adverse health effects at levels found or expected in the general environment (<4.2 ppb). Experimental data do not indicate adverse health effects in humans at a TLV of 1,000 ppm. At exposure levels greatly exceeding 1,000 ppm, impairment of neurological and cognitive functions (humans) and detrimental cardiovascular effects (animals) have been observed. A major concern and uncertainty involves its role in the expected depletion of stratospheric ozone. A decrease in the ozone level is expected to result in an increased amount of biologically-damaging radiation at the earth's surface. The lifetime of chlorofluorocarbon 113 in the atmosphere is about 86 years.
