Description:

An analysis of historical trend data for emissions and air quality in Houston for period of 1974-78 is conducted for the purposes of checking the EKMA O3-predicting model and of exploring empirical relations between emission changes and O3 air quality in the Houston area. Results from the EKMA testing analysis were inconclusive mainly because the O3 air quality changes during the 1974-78 period were very small. Results from the emissions-to-air quality empirical relationship analysis explained the previously noted paradox that the O3 air quality did not improve despite substantial control of hydrocarbon emissions during 1974-78. The explanation is that source growth during that period nearly offset the effect of emission controls and that many such controls were installed prior to 1974.
