Description:

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) carries out research programs, many of which help EPA fulfill its environmental protection programs and lead to the development and commercial use of environmental technologies. any of the latter are used to improve air and water quality and clean up contaminated soils. e will continue to look for new, more cost-effective solutions to prevent and control threats to the environment. qually, we are embarking on sweeping changes. ome are in response to independent studies, but all are motivated by the need to maintain are environmental science leadership into the next century. or engineering research, as well as ORD's other research activities, these changes will mean: increased anticipatory, long-term research to ensure EPA has an excellent science base to address present and future environmental concerns; more funds for extramural research grants to strengthen our ties with the larger scientific community, and create a graduate student fellowship program to help prepare the next generation of environmental engineers and scientists; a functional realignment of ORD to streamline operations and make our laboratories more efficient by reducing layers of management among laboratories that perform complementary research; and strengthened peer review of EPA reports, studies, projects, and findings. hase I of EPA's reorganization plan took effect in April. ts 12 laboratories, four assessment offices, and six Washington-based offices became three national laboratories and two national centers.
