Impact/Purpose:

Clear and inclusive definitions of microplastics (MP) allow us to effectively frame research concerning MP, while providing an umbrella for consistency across a range of policy goals and regulatory actions.  A common understanding and definition of MP would help to rationally streamline interaction and collaboration among the different members of the MPs community.  To move towards this goal, this brief Viewpoint article compares several MP definations used by governments, government agencies and international groups.

Description:

The term ‘Microplastic’ was coined about 20 years ago by Thompson et al. (2004). Defining the term microplastics (MP) can stir strong sentiments in some microplastic research and management circles. Some venture that if these particles had not been called ‘microplastics’, but instead a more generic term such as ‘broken plastics’ or ‘small plastics’ that the definition would not be as contentious. Some believe in a broad definition that includes all small secondary and primary plastic particles, while others state that the ‘micro-‘and ‘nano-‘prefixes should only be used in the classic terminology of the metric system (e.g., 1 to 1000 μm for micro and 1 to 1000 nm for nano). Still others propose classifying these plastic particles by function. It is a classic exchange of ideas between “lumpers” and “splitters”, and the struggle between “purist” and “unitarian” thought.
