Targeted and Non-Targeted Analytical Methods for PFAS Detection and Quantification in Environmental Matrices (April 2024)

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation covers updates as of March 2024 regarding EPA methods for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as well as ongoing method development work within EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD). EPA Methods 1633 and 1621 were finalized on January 31, 2024. Future updates within the SW-846 methods program include revisions to 3512 and 8327, new sample preparation methods, adaptation of leaching environmental assessment framework (LEAF) methods for PFAS, and evaluation of the Total Oxidizable Precursor (TOP) Assay. ORD has multiple PFAS methods currently in development, such as extractable organofluorine (EOF) and semi-volatile PFAS precursors in aqueous samples. There are also efforts underway within ORD to develop frameworks for non-targeted analysis (NTA) of PFAS, which will involve the upcoming EPA NTA WebApp and other tools that support experimental design, data processing, quantitation, and reporting.
