Small, M., D. Barton, AND J. Zambrana. EPA and Tribal Actions to address PFAS and 6PPD-quinone. 2023 Tribal EPA & U.S. EPA Region 9 Annual Conference, Alpine, CA, October 24 - 26, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Tribes, tribal lands, and ecosystems on which Tribes depend are impacted by contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). This presentation is an opportunity to co-present with a Tribal partner on the latest efforts to by EPA and Tribes to address PFAS and 6PPD-quinone. Since both of these CEC impact Tribes in EPA Region 9, attendees will learn about relevant efforts to address them.

Description:

Abstract: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries since the 1940s. PFAS are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world and are present at low levels in a variety of food products and in the environment. PFAS are found in water, air, fish, and soil at locations across the nation and the globe. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. https://www.epa.gov/pfas.   6ppd-quinone has been identified as highly toxic to coho salmon and potentially other species. It is a breakdown product of 6ppd, an additive incorporated in rubber tires to help prevent cracking and degrading when exposed to oxygen, ozone, and temperature fluctuations. 6ppd-quinone can be present at toxic concentrations in roadway runoff and stormwater-affected creeks.   This session will provide updates on EPA and Tribal efforts to address PFAS and 6ppd-quinone. By the end of this session, attendees will: * Better understand potential Tribal issues and hazards associated with PFAS and 6ppd-quinone contamination. * Know what actions EPA is taking to address PFAS and 6ppd-quinone.
