Environmental Geophysics Overview, Research, and Applications

Citation:

Werkema, D. Environmental Geophysics Overview, Research, and Applications. ROCS-Net PESD meeting, newport, OR, October 04 - 19, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

The presentation gives a broad overview of environmental geophysics applications, research, and resources.  It covers geophysics applications for finding subsurface objects, mapping contamination, monitoring passive and active remediation, conceptual site model development, groundwater – surface water interactions related to acid mine drainage, mapping the saltwater-freshwater interface, and demonstrating the environmental geophysics web site.  Participants should learn the wide breadth of applications, research results, and resources for further inquiry.

Description:

This presentation to the ROCS-Net group provides an introduction to environmental geophysics.  Environmental geophysics is defined with applications.  Several examples of research results are presented including some of the latest innovations in EPA's environmental geophysics portfolio.  Case studies include geophysical investigations and the geophysical response for contaminant mapping, active and passive remediation monitoring, geophysics to aid conceptual site model development, groundwater - surface water interactions related to mine influenced groundwater, detecting and mapping the freshwater - saltwater interface using surface geophysical methods, and available online resources via EPA's environmental geophysics web site.
