Smoke: What is it and where does it come from?

Citation:

Holder, A. Smoke: What is it and where does it come from? International Emissions Inventory Conference, Seattle, WA, September 26 - 29, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Smoke from wildfires, prescribed fires, and residential wood combustion is one of the largest sources of fine particulate matter in the US. While much progress has been made in reducing emissions from other sources, smoke emissions have increased in recent years, resulting in poor air quality in many parts of the US. This presentation provides an overview of the trends in smoke emissions, a summary of current knowledge on smoke chemistry, and explores some of the needs related to developing emission inventories for smoke.
