Impact/Purpose:

This  presentation titled "SENTINEL (Sensor Intelligent Emissions Locator): A Quality Assurance Application for Sensors" is submitted to the  2023 EPA Air Sensors Quality Assurance Workshop to be held July 25-27, 2023 at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The presentation describes the development of an application in the R language called the SEnsor NeTwork INtelligent Emissions Locator (SENTINEL) that provides users with a tool to process, analyze, and build visualizations of data collected during lower-cost fenceline sensor deployments. SENTINEL incorporates automated Quality Assurance (QA) checks as well as manual QA inspections, where the user can indicate data flags through an interface in the application. This combination of QA, processing, and standardized analysis allows users to make sense of large amounts of sensor data from multiple deployments.

Description:

The EPA Office of Research and Development’s Next Generation Emission Measurement (NGEM) program conducts research on low-cost air sensors located at the fenceline of known emissions sources. The measurements collected by these fenceline sensors can be used to inform regulators, industries, and communities of potential fugitive emissions and industrial process malfunctions. This knowledge allows facilities to quickly perform repairs and help reduce potential impacts to nearby communities. These fenceline sensor deployments produce large amounts of data. The air quality and meteorological data collected by the sensors requires data refining such as Quality Assurance (QA) treatments before it can be analyzed. The SEnsor NeTwork INtelligent Emissions Locator (SENTINEL) application, a Shiny application developed in R, provides users with a tool to process, analyze, and visualize fenceline sensor data. This presentation contains an overview of the NGEM area and the capabilities of the SENTINEL application.
