Salls, W., B. Schaeffer, P. Werdell, R. Stumpf, AND K. Loftin. CyAN: Cyanobacteria Assessment Network. NASA Applied Sciences Water Resources Meeting, Salt Lake City, UT, October 05 - 07, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

I will be presenting on the CyAN project at the NASA Water Resources meeting. I will share progress from the last year and recent or anticipated examples of positive impacts on water resources achieved by the project. The meeting will convene the NASA Applied Sciences Water Resources community to highlight the progress and impacts achieved by projects supported by the program. The meeting will include presentations from projects and partners, poster sessions, and opportunities for discussion around shared challenges and emerging opportunities that are important to the community.

Description:

The Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) is a collaboration between EPA, NASA, NOAA, and USGS seeking to develop and mainstream remotely sensed satellite data products for cyanobacteria monitoring. Mobile and web apps allow lake managers and the public to view near-real-time data in lakes across the Conterminous U.S. Data is also available for download for users seeking to customize their own products. The project has developed three summary metrics (spatial extent, temporal frequency, and magnitude), which are now available on EPA's EnviroAtlas and Report on the Environment. Inclusion in the How's My Waterway? Tool is also planned. Several states and tribes now actively use the data in their cyanobacteria monitoring plans, and professors use the data as an example in classrooms. As the project concludes its final year of NASA funding, its impacts continue to broaden and deepen.
