Environmental DNA as a tool for invasive species surveillance

Impact/Purpose:

Provides overview of environmental DNA approaches to invasive species surveillance, for a non-technical audience. Reviews benefits and challenges associated with those approaches

Description:

Environmental DNA provides a way to monitor for the presence of invasive species that is potentially more sensitive, less expensive, and more rapid than existing approaches. These methods have been applied in nearly every environment to target a wide variety of target organisms. Increased sensitivity of eDNA methods comes with a number of management challenges, but enables decision-makers to detect potential invasions before they cause substantial ecological or economic harm.
