Impact/Purpose:

Minimal research exists assessing the extent to which these expected benefits in nutrient reductions are propagated downstream at various watershed scales to meet nutrient management goals. We ask the question: How far downstream do wetland restoration effects propagate?

Description:

Recent studies highlight the potential role of wetland restoration and conservation practices in mitigating surplus nitrogen from agricultural runoff. However, minimal research exists assessing the extent to which these expected benefits in nutrient reductions are propagated downstream at various watershed scales to meet nutrient management goals. In this study, we ask: how far downstream do wetland restoration effects propagate? Tentative results suggest that nitrate reductions at the subbasin level depend on wetland area, catchment-to-wetland area ratio, and stream order and that larger subbasin reductions propagate further downstream.
