Impact/Purpose:
This work is an evaluation of the VOC removal potential of DIY and commercial air cleaners for remediation of indoor air quality impacted by wildfire smoke.
Description:
Increasing wildfire impacts in the Western US have motivated the assessment of air cleaners for remediating smoke infiltration into homes. DIY filters and commercially available air cleaners have shown effectiveness at removing smoke generated PM, but the removal of smoke generated volatile organics has been more difficult to evaluate. Our work used a fast response non-targeted VOC measurement technique to evaluate smoke generated VOC removal by air cleaners in an environmental chamber. Controllable variables including fan speed, initial PM loading, and combustion efficiency were evaluated for a suite of commercial and DIY filters.
