Ho, K. AND R. Burgess. U.S. Government Nanoplastics Interagency Interest Group- US EPA Microplastic Research. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) Public Webinar: Overview of U.S. Government Activities Addressing Micro- and Nanoplastics Issues, NA, DC, June 06, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This short 10 min presentation hosted by the National Nano Initiative / National Nano Coordinating Office covers EPA historical and future research on micro/ nano plastics.  It allows interested parties to be informed of governmental research on the topic of micro/ nano plastics.

Description:

This high-level overview includes USEPA’s research to standardize and develop extraction and identification methods for Micro/nano plastics (MP) from environmental matrices.  Analysis of MP is complicated due to their heterogeneous nature, large concentrations of additives and three order magnitude size range from the millimeter to the nanometer scale.  Highlights include method development for sediments which is to be adopted by the State of California and collaboration with other governmental agencies.  In addition, research performed by EPA’s Office of Water will be covered including the: MP Expert Workshop, Report on Microfiber Pollution that includes a federal plan to prevent and address microfiber pollution, and Roundtable Forum on Tire Wear Particles.
