CSO Treatment and Control Challenges: A Need for Innovative Technologies and Approaches, Cincinnati

Citation:

Murray, D. CSO Treatment and Control Challenges: A Need for Innovative Technologies and Approaches, Cincinnati. University of Cincinnati, Environmental Engineering Capstone Class, Cincinnati, OH, February 22, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will be given to the University of Cincinnati class, Environmental Engineering Senior Capstone, to inform graduating seniors on the unique challenges facing engineers as they control CSOs.

Description:

The control of CSOs requires innovative technologies and approaches.  These overflow discharges are very dynamic due to them being a product of urban rainfall.  Their nature, both flow and pollutant load, is driven by many factors, especially rainfall intensity and frequency.  As such, climate change impacts on rainfall is an important aspect of storm dynamics that needs to be evaluated.  A wide range of treatment and management techniques can be effective in controlling CSO impacts.  An emerging approach is the real-time management of the collection system, often referred to as "smart sewers."
