McDonnell, B., K. Ratliff, M. Tryby, J. Wu, AND A. Mullapudi. PySWMM: The Python Interface to Stormwater Management Model (SWMM). Journal of Open Source Software. Journal of Open Source Software, 5(52):2292, (2020). https://doi.org/10.21105/joss.02292

Impact/Purpose:

This model review paper describes the need and use cases of PySWMM, a Python wrapper to the EPA's Stormwater Management Model (SWMM). SWMM is used widely throughout the world for conducting single event or long-term hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality simulations. PySWMM enables users to interact with the model during simulation time, which facilitates rapid model prototyping and optimization. At EPA, PySWMM is used in the Homeland Security Research Program to model the fate and transport of contamination and pollutants in urban environments. This article is of broad interest to researchers, engineers, and decision-makers who are supported by stormwater modeling and SWMM.

Description:

Stormwater management seeks to reduce runoff and improve water quality, and EPA's Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) has been used for decades to conduct hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality simulations that aid in planning, analyzing, and designing stormwater drainage systems. PySWMM and the development of the SWMM application programming interface (API) allows the model user to access and interact with the SWMM data model during a simulation, which allows researchers and engineers to streamline stormwater model optimization, controls, and result post-processing in order to more effectively address scientific and engineering questions related to water runoff quantity and quality. PySWMM is currently being used to address a range of topics in industry, academia, and in government.
