Greenscapes to Brownscapes: A Pilot Project for Reclaiming Highways

Citation:

Baldauf, R. Greenscapes to Brownscapes: A Pilot Project for Reclaiming Highways. Greenbuild 2022, San Francisco, CA, November 01 - 03, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Numerous health studies show that exposures to traffic emissions can have adverse human health impacts.  Emissions can lead to exposures by breathing as well as deposition onto the ground for potential dermal and ingestion exposures.  Many community gardens have been located near large roadways.  This presentation and panel discussion will provide a summary of previous research on near-road health concerns and impacts related to air quality, which will be useful to the planners and community leaders attending the conference

Description:

A brief presentation followed by a panel discussion will be given on EPA research related to near-road air quality, adverse health effects, and potential mitigation by urban green infrastructure.  The presentation and panel discussion will be geared towards communities with existing or an interest in developing community gardens and the benefits and concerns when locating these gardens near large highways
