EPA Research to Support Tribes

Impact/Purpose:

ORD FY23-26 research portflio was informed by engagement with different EPA sponsored tribal partnership groups, and through consultation with tribes across the country. In response to science needs identified that if addressed could better support tribes in protecting the environment and human health, ORD is planning to dedicate a portion of its research portfolio to meeting those needs. The Region 9 Tribal Conference provides a venue for ORD to share details on its new research portfolio and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration, which may include project where there can be co-production of knowledge. This unique opportunity will allow interested attendees to meet ORD's leadership and hear about current priorities of the administration.

Description:

EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) provides the data, tools, and information that form the sound scientific foundation the Agency relies on to fulfill its mission to protect the environment and safeguard public health. In carrying out the agency's Tribal trust responsibility and government-to-government relationship, ORD engages with Tribes through the EPA National-Tribal Science Council (TSC), and other tribal partnership groups, through hosting listening sessions, and by offering official consultation to inform the development and implementation of ORD’s research portfolio to support tribal environmental and public health needs.   During this session, EPA staff will provide an overview of ORD’s planned research portfolio – including aspects of the regional science program – to support tribes. Topics of discussion will include planned research efforts aligned with R9 Tribes’ needs, opportunities to collaborate with ORD researchers, and needed efforts to bridge indigenous and modern western science. This session will also include a presentation from EPA’s Assistant Administrator for Research and Development, Dr. Christopher Frey, who will discuss the Biden Administration’s priorities for Tribal partners and ORD’s research agenda.
