Brake wear data set

Citation:

Martin, J., M. Hays, AND R. Baldauf. Brake wear data set. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This sub product satisfies product AE 2.3.5.   These data comprise a novel contribution to the characterization of brake wear emissions, a set of materials poorly represented in available databases. These data are available for use in characterization of brake friction material composition and more broadly in source apportionment and pollutant identification of roadway emissions. It is also available for inclusion in emissions profiles and use in air quality modeling. Furthermore, this dataset may be useful to future researchers in refining methods of brake wear emissions tests and characterization methods.

Description:

A dynamometer study conducted for the California Air Resources Board directly collected particulate emissions from brake materials emitted during simulated driving and braking. Multiple vehicles and brake materials were used. These brake filters, along with whole brake pad material taken from the brake pad, were characterized via multiple laboratory methods in order to identify the major metallic and organic substituents present both in the original material and in the XXXX. Thermal desorption-GC/MS, OC:EC via combined pyrolysis/oxidation, SEM/EDS, and XRF were used to characterize organic, inorganic, and elemental metal species present on the collected filters. FTIR was further used on Teflon filters to characterize the organic species.
