Measuring Emissions from Plumes

Citation:

Gullett, B. Measuring Emissions from Plumes. Federal UxS Workshop, NA, CA, September 13 - 15, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation describes the use of sensors aboard unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for obtaining plume concentration data to be used in improving dispersion models. The presentation describes a campaign in 2022 in Alaska that measured concentrations in the plume of a burning oil slick on water. To our knowledge, this is the first time a UAS has been used to obtain data to improve dispersion models. This presentation would be of interest to air pollution samplers, modelers, and energency response personnel.

Description:

•UAS provide an opportunity to characterize plumes for emission concentrations •Yields real time, spatial data on plume concentrations that can be used to refine and evaluate dispersion models •Eliminates constraints of ground-based measurements •Dispersion model improvements advance protection for emergency workers and downwind populations
