Nontarget Analyses (NTA) and Emerging Environmental Contaminants: Implications for Agrochemical Risk Assessment

Impact/Purpose:

The authors co-organized a symposium on this topic for the Agrochemicals (AGRO) Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2021 Meeting. Our goal was to consider three questions: (1) Will discovery of thousands of new xenobiotics worldwide change the perspective of pesticides as especially problematic chemicals, or will their use intensity continue to keep them in public focus? (2) Will nontarget analyses (NTA) increase concerns about pesticide metabolites and formulation ingredients? (3) Will NTA’s enormous expansion of identified contaminants and their occurrences, combined within-silico predictions of the chemical−biochemical activity of those contaminants, allow for improved predictions of environmental fate and exposure or even toxicology and total risk based on chemical structure alone? Twelve presenters from six countries (Canada, France, Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland, and the US) provided an engrossing overview of this powerful developing technology and some fascinating examples of its application in, especially, agricultural settings.

Description:

Review article following up on presentation about nontarget analyses to American Chemical Society in Fall 2021. The article is structured as an update to the three major questions brought up at the conference. Will discovery of thousands of new xenobiotics worldwide change the perspective of pesticides as especially problematic chemicals? Will NTA increase concerns about pesticide metabolites and formulation ingredients? Will NTA combined with Big Data ultimately provide in silico tools for predicting environmental risk of xenobiotics?
