Use of Built and Green Infrastructure for Air Quality Mitigation

Citation:

Baldauf, R. Use of Built and Green Infrastructure for Air Quality Mitigation. CRC MSAT Conference, Sacramento (and virtual), CA, February 08 - 10, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Near-road air pollution has been shown to be a major public health concern due to traffic emissions.  Thus, methods are needed to mitigate these negative human health and environmental impacts.  This presentation describes methods of using urban design to mitigate near-road air polluiton, which is beneficial for urban planners, community leaders and public health officials in implementing community planning programs

Description:

Near-road air pollution has been identified as a major public health concern.  This presentation provides a review of methods and results of studies that highlight the potential for urban designs with solid and vegetation barriers to improve local, near-road air quality.  The presentation also provides recommendations for implementing these strategies and avoiding unintended consequences when planning transportation facilities and urban greening projects
