Impact/Purpose:

The information from this presentation will be used by EPA Regional personnel, state primacy personnel, and local water managers to make harmful algal bloom management decisions.

Description:

In-vivo toxicity tests with aquatic indicator species, Ceriodaphnia dubia, were performed with both the cyanobacterial extract and hydrogen peroxide algaecide at water temperatures of 25°C and 27°C degrees Celsius.  The goal was to better understand how temperature affects the toxicity of algaecide and released cyanobacterial cell material as measured by the mortality of test organisms. The LC50 for organisms at 25° Celsius exposed to hydrogen peroxide was 3.6 mg/L. The LC50 for organisms at 25° Celsius exposed to cell lysates was 1100 µg/L. The LC50 for organisms at 27° Celsius exposed to hydrogen peroxide was 3.0 mg/L. The LC50 for organisms at 27° Celsius exposed to cell lysates was above 1700 µg/L.
