GLIMPSE: supporting air and climate decision-making

Citation:

Loughlin, Dan AND Chris Nolte. GLIMPSE: supporting air and climate decision-making. Webinar series: Approaches and Solutions for Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) Achievement in Alberta, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, October 19, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

This is invited 25 minute talk as part of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) webinar series on "Approaches and solutions for Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) Achievement in Alberta". On their website, CASA is described as "a multi-stakeholder partnership ... composed of representatives selected by industry, government and non-government organizations ... committed to a comprehensive air quality management system for Alberta." Speakers in the webinar series include experts on air pollution in Canada and the United States. EPA's GLIMPSE team has been asked to present about how integrated assessment models, such as GCAM, can inform air quality and climate decision making. In this presentation, we will provide background on the GLIMPSE project and the GCAM model, present results from a recent publication, and describe how GCAM outputs can be used within air quality models.

Description:

The Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) is an open source human-earth systems model originally developed to evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the efficacy of national and international mitigation strategies. Since 2000, improvements to GCAM include greater technological detail, air pollutant emissions, state-level resolution, and representations of air, climate, and energy policies. GCAM can now be used to evaluate the energy and emission impacts of measures such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, and end-use electrification. EPA has integrated GCAM into the GLIMPSE (GCAM Long-term Interactive Multi-Pollutant Scenario Evaluator) decision support tool to facilitate wider distribution and use of the model.
