ORD Oil Spill Response Support Research Update

Citation:

Conmy, R. ORD Oil Spill Response Support Research Update. State of California Oil Spill Preparedness & Response Tech Workshop, Virtual, CA, February 22 - 25, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will highlight our oil research portfolio which includes (1) Technical support for the NCP Product Schedule through reference oil screening, developing efficacy protocols for products, and evaluating toxicity testing. (2) Research to characterize the behavior, fate, and effects of various oils and spill treating agents. This includes toxicity, biodegradation, and chemical characterization experiments at the lab-scale. (3) Tank-scale simulations of oil slicks and plumes allow for refining detection tools and platforms that we ultimately test at field-scale deployments. Special focus will be given to providing updates on our Surface Washing Agent Protocol development and results of a project on oil dispersion over varying salinities. It will be present at the 2021 state of California Oil Spill Preparedness & Response Tech Workshop

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development, Homeland Security Research Program (HSRP) aims to increase United States’ capabilities to prepare for and respond to releases of oil and hazardous substances into the environment. HSRP’s innovative research approaches help to achieve more efficient and effective management of oil spills with respect to preparedness, emergency response, and fate and transport. This research has fostered strong interagency (NOAA, USCG, BSEE, USGS) and international collaboration (Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada).
