Epidemiology in Risk Assessment – A Case-study of Libby Amphibole Asbestos- presentation

Citation:

Bateson, T. Epidemiology in Risk Assessment – A Case-study of Libby Amphibole Asbestos- presentation. "Introduction to Environmental Risk Assessment and Management", Washington, DC, February 25, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation is for a lecture at Georgetown University, Environmental Meteorology and Policy Program, EMAP 514: Introduction to Environmental Risk Assessment and Management to be delivered on February 25, 2019. The expectations to be learned from this lecture via using a case-study: (1) to understand how an EPA Toxicological Review fits within the risk assessment paradigm; (2) to understand how hazard identification and dose-response characterize human health hazards; and (3) to understand how human health data may be used to derive toxicity values for application in human health risk assessments.

Description:

In 2009, EPA (jointly with the Department of Health and Human Services) announced a public health emergency at the Libby Superfund Site because of the serious health impacts of Libby Amphibole asbestos contamination in the community. This is the first time EPA has made a finding that conditions at a Superfund site warrant declaring a public health emergency. Completing the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment was an important step for the Agency to better understand and mitigate remaining risk at the site.
