Collocated Air Sensor Shelters for Tribes and Citizen Science: Project Introduction

Citation:

Clements, A., R. Brown, D. Garver, M. Miller, K. Johnson, AND A. Kaufman. Collocated Air Sensor Shelters for Tribes and Citizen Science: Project Introduction. Discussion with Tribal Air Monitoring Support Center (TAMS), RTP, North Carolina, March 23 - 31, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

The use of air sensor technologies is growing and sensors have been used by individuals, community groups, students, researchers, air monitoring agencies and more. However, data quality is still highly variable among sensor models. Collocation of air sensors with higher grade measurements is a good way to evaluate a sensor's data quality and to develop corrections equations that can increase their accuracy. The project, introduced and outlined here, will build and deploy air sensor collocation shelters around the country at existing tribal, local, or state agency air monitoring sites in order to promote air sensor projects and collocation with regulatory monitors. This brief presentation is an introduction to inform prospective air monitoring agency partners. Once completed, other organizations including state/local/tribal agencies, EPA Regional offices, researchers, and community groups will benefit from design documents and best practices which will be catalogued as part of this effort.

However, data quality is still highly variable among sensor models. Collocation of air sensors with higher grade measurements is a good way to evaluate a sensor's data quality and to develop corrections equations that can increase their accuracy. To help support collocation efforts, this will build and deploy air sensor collocation shelters around the country at existing tribal, local, or state agency air monitoring sites thus creating the infrastructure needed to support air sensor projects and collocation with regulatory monitors. This brief presentation is an introduction to inform prospective air monitoring agency partners about the project, the opportunity to participate, and the expectations of partner agencies.
