Impact/Purpose:

WetQual is a standalone model intended to simulate wetland and carbon function, specifically, physical and biochemical processes responsible for transport, retention, biochemical transformation, gas phase emissions and export of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon in natural and surface-water treatment wetlands. The model can be used to simulate and further the understanding of transport and fate of nutrients and carbon in natural wetlands and has the potential of use in the design and performance assessment of treatment wetlands. The users of the WetQual-GUI User Manual are the USEPA Office of Water (OW), Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds (OWOW), Regional Offices, and State Agencies, eco-hydrologists, wetland scientists as well as wetland managers. Users with a basic knowledge of hydrology and water quality can easily apply WetQual model to their wetland sites and related projects. In addition to research applications, WetQual GUI can be utilized as a teaching tool in courses that include surface water quality and/or mathematical models.

Description:

The WetQual Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed to process input and outputs as well as run the Wetland Water Quality Model, WetQual (Hantush et al. 2013; Kalin et al. 2013; Sharifi et al. 2013). It was written in C#.NET environment (within the Microsoft Visual Studio 2015). The process based WetQual model simulates nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), total suspended sediment (TSS) and carbon (C) cycles and their dynamics in wetlands. It has a generic, lumped mass plant/algae growth and decay module. The current version of GUI works with the continuously flooded type of wetlands and does not simulate partially saturated soils. WetQual GUI simplifies the input/out processing and provides a quick visualization of inputs/outputs. It reads in various hydroclimate and water quality inputs to produce the time series of water quality constituents coming out of the wetland. The GUI allows WetQual model to be run either in a deterministic or stochastic mode. If observed data is available, the GUI can also perform Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) and Bayesian Monte Carlo (BMC) analyses where users can perform uncertainty analyses. The GUI also provides platform for sensitivity analysis using Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test and dotty plots. WetQual GUI runs only under Windows operating systems. Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5.2 or higher version is required, which is included in Windows 10, but should be installed for older versions. The GUI is freely available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for non-commercial and educational uses.
