Fire Hydrant Flushing Treatment Diffusser and Effectiveness of Flushing Hydrants for Contamination Removal

Impact/Purpose:

EPA researchers from the Wide Area and Infrastructure Branch performed this research to demonstrate field decontamination methods in response to a contamination event within a water distribution system. Flushing contaminated water out of the distribution system provides results of full scale demonstrations of hydrant based decontamination and contaminant removal technologies for Utilities to develop best practices for field applications.

Description:

Flushing contaminated water out of the distribution system using the existing network of fire hydrants is considered the most probable first action in response to a drinking water system contamination incident. Hydrant Flushing and Chlorination experiments were conducted at the Water Security Test Bed at Idaho National Lab.
