Impact/Purpose:

The EPA Region 4 Office and EPA Office of Research and Development developed a web-based interactive Story Map that examines the intersection of green infrastructure and health within the context of the Proctor Creek watershed. The goal is to convey information about flooding, urban heat islands, and mosquitoes and their connection to health in the Proctor Creek communities of northwest Atlanta. The information, tools, and resources provided in the Story Map can be used by the community and decision-makers to help identify locations in the watershed to maximize the health benefits of green infrastructure to the community.

Description:

EPA conducted a project in the Proctor Creek communities of Atlanta, GA to evaluate the expansion of green infrastructure and other low-impact development techniques throughout the watershed. This effort has grown out of a previous Health Impact Assessment (HIA), “Proctor Creek’s Boone Boulevard Green Street Project HIA” and RESES Project, “Conducting an HIA in the Proctor Creek District of Atlanta, GA to assess the distribution of both environmental and health impacts as Green Infrastructure approaches to Community Revitalization move forward.”The purpose of this project is to evaluate the proposed green infrastructure expansion for potential impacts on environmental and public health, to incorporate community driven health concerns, and to inform future decisions around green infrastructure. The project also provides an avenue for continued community involvement in decisions affecting the community, and for opportunities for capacity building and strengthening of collaborations between the community, governmental partners, and others to achieve a meaningful outcome in the community.
