Citation:

Hall, Alex AND F. Kremer. UST Finder: The National Underground Storage Tanks and Release Web Map. To be Presented at Region 5 UST Finder Workshop, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 02, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

There have been approximately 2.2 million underground storage tanks (USTs) installed in the United States. These tanks contain petroleum products and hazardous substances harmful to humans and the environment. On any given day, 6 billion gallons of these substances are stored beneath our feet. In this inventory, there have been over 500,000 leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) since 1989 alone. These releases can contaminate public and private drinking water supplies, contaminate soil and waterbodies, and cause petroleum vapor intrusion issues in buildings. UST Finder is a web mapping application that provides the locations of and information on this infrastructure, nationally. It also allows users to identify risks public and private drinking water supplies.

Description:

This presentation will provide EPA Region 5 stakeholder (UST program managers, emergency response, and water utilities) a demonstrations of UST Finder, general UST/LUST issues facing the region, and ways to incorporate UST Finder into routine operations and cleanup.
