Citation:

Simon, M. USEPA’s Research for the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). 54th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WATER MANAGEMENT MODELING, Toronto, Ontario, CANADA, February 24 - 25, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

This talk will discuss developments of SWMM since 2015, the SWMM development community practices, and EPA’s protocol for accepting outside developments to SWMM to an international SWMM Conference

Description:

SWMM is the workhouse program for stormwater and wastewater management. In 2005, USEPA’s Lew Rossman refactored SWMM 4 (FORTRAN) into SWMM 5 in C. Green infrastructure was added into SWMM 5.1 in 2010. Dr. Rossman continues to develop SWMM, even after his retirement from EPA in 2015. USEPA works with Dr. Rossman but also continuously develops SWMM with others in a Community Development environment. USEPA has developed various methods of software testing, including unit testing, regression testing, and metamorphic testing. In its GitHub site, USEPA encourages community contributions and has an automated GitHub Actions protocol. This talk will discuss developments of SWMM since 2015, the SWMM development community practices, and EPA’s protocol for accepting outside developments to SWMM.
