Impact/Purpose:

StEWI was created to expedite and simplify extraction of EPA emission and waste inventory data and apply a deep understanding of the inventories to combine the data from multiple inventories and remove overlap that occurs because of redundancy in release reporting. It is designed for those developing applications or creating scientific models that require data from one or more inventories in an automated fashion without having to have deep knowledge of the inventory data sources and data delivery protocols.

Description:

StEWI is a collection of Python modules that provide processed EPA emission and waste generation inventory data in standard tabular formats. The standard outputs may be further aggregated or filtered based on given criteria, and can be combined based on common facility and flows across the inventories. StEWI consists of a core module, stewi, that digests and provides the USEPA inventory data in standard formats. Two matcher modules, the facilitymatcher and chemicalmatcher, provide commons IDs for facilities and flows across inventories, which is used by the stewicombo module to combine the data, and optionally remove overlaps and remove double counting of groups of chemicals based on user preferences. This first beta version provide standard outputs for four EPA inventories sources - eGRID, NEI, TRI, and RCRAInfo - for years between 2011 and 2016.
