Impact/Purpose:

Attached is the presentation, “Land Application Field Study II”, that will be delivered at Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA) Biosolids Conference, August 18-20, 2020, Holland, Mi. MWEA represents more than 2,00 water quality professionals statewide who are dedicated to preserving, restoring and enhancing Michigan’s water resources. This Biosolids Conference will be focusing on the state of knowledge surrounding PFAS issues as they relate to the production, use, and disposal of biosolids. We are sending an advance copy of this presentation to you for your awareness since it addresses PFAS and biosolids.

Description:

This presentation describes a field study which occurred from 2012 to 2015. The broad goal of this research study is to evaluate the fate of chemical and microbial species in biosolids after land application. In this study, Class B biosolids were applied to a field at agronomic levels in pilot-scale units. The biosolids were applied using two common practices, liquid and solid application. The following constituents were measured in samples from these pilot units: fecal coliforms, coliphage, total biomass and microbial community structure, alkylphenol ethoxylates and degradation products (such as nonylphenol [NP] study involving), selected metals, PFAS, and various nutrients such as total phosphorous and nitrogen species. The constituents were measured for a year following application. These constituents were also measured in solid biosolids controls over the study period. Concentrations over this time period will be used to evaluate the persistence of these species. The data from the liquid and solid application techniques will be compared to determine if application method affects persistence.
