Characterizing the Atmospheric Transport and Deposition of PFAS Emissions from a Manufacturer near Fayetteville, NC

Citation:

D'Ambro, E., H. Pye, AND B. Murphy. Characterizing the Atmospheric Transport and Deposition of PFAS Emissions from a Manufacturer near Fayetteville, NC. Air and Waste Management Association, Virtual, Virtual, September 15 - 17, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

The results will be used to better understand the full scope of historical air emissions of PFAS from the Chemours, NC facility. The model developed for this product may be further developed with the specific chemistry of PFAS compounds emitted by other facilities in the U.S. and be applied to those contexts. Eventually, we will analyze the regional-scale emissions, fate and transport of PFAS throughout the continental U.S.

Description:

The product addresses continued development of the understanding of fate and transport of PFAS air emissions and potential impacts on ecosystems and contributions to human exposure via atmospheric deposition. Thus, the aims of the product directly address the priorities of the Agency in characterizing, regulating, and mitigating exposure of Americans to PFAS compounds. This product involves the characterization of PFAS air emissions from important large point sources (e.g., Chemours Processing Facility outside Fayetteville, NC) and the exploration of the effects of likely atmospheric oxidation pathways on the form and abundance of atmospherically relevant PFAS compounds.
