GLIMPSE air quality management decision support tool

Citation:

Loughlin, Dan, Chris Nolte, A. Kreider, AND S. Smith. GLIMPSE air quality management decision support tool. MARAMA Training Webinar, virtual meeting, District Of Columbia, April 16, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association (MARAMA) holds regular training webinars on various topics, including new and emerging tools for assisting with air quality management. The purpose of this presentation is the introduce the EPA Office of Research and Development's GLIMPSE (GCAM Long-term Interactive Multi-Pollutant Scenario Evaluator) to that audience. We will provide an overview of GLIMPSE and demonstrate how it could be used. We will also seek to get feedback from the attendees regarding how they could use GLIMPSE and ask for their assistance in identifying case studies of interest. This presentation is associated with our ongoing RARE grant with EPA Region 3.

Description:

The U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) is developing a modeling framework called the GCAM Long-term Interactive Multi-Pollutant Scenario Evaluator, or GLIMPSE, that has the potential to explore a wide range of topics of interest to states. By considering energy system dynamics, GLIMPSE can be used to estimate state-level air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions through 2050, evaluate how emissions change under alternative scenarios (e.g., the introduction of a new technology or policy), and identify cost-effective strategies for meeting state air quality and climate goals simultaneously. In this presentation, Dan Loughlin will provide an overview of GLIMPSE and demonstrate how it can be used to evaluate the net change in emissions for a scenario involving increased electric vehicle adoption. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of how a tool such as GLIMPSE could most effectively support states’ needs, and we will seek to identify several specific case studies that we would conduct over the next year.
