GLIMPSE: Overview and illustrative application

Citation:

Loughlin, Dan, Chris Nolte, S. Smith, AND A. Kreider. GLIMPSE: Overview and illustrative application. Meeting with staff and managers from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Harrisburg (Webinar), PA, March 05, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

Despite air quality improvements over the past 50 years, nearly 40% of the U.S. population lives in counties that designated have poor air quality. States are responsible for developing air quality management strategies. Additionally, many states have developed clean energy, vehicle electrification, and greenhouse reduction targets. Tools are needed to identify tradeoffs and synergies among these goals and identify cost-effective strategies for meeting these multiple goals simultaneously. The GLIMPSE decision support system is being developed for this purpose. In this presentation, we are providing background information and demonstrating the application of the tool.

Description:

In this presentation, ORD researchers will introduce the GLIMPSE air quality management decision support tool and underlying model, GCAM, to staff and managers within the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The presentation will include a demonstration of how GLIMPSE could be applied to assess a state-level policy: in this instance, joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. We will gauge interest in GLIMPSE and this application. We will also seek input about other potential scenarios and policy analyses of interest to their organization. (Acronyms: GCAM - Global Change Assessment Model; GLIMPSE - GCAM Long-term Interactive Multi-Pollutant Scenario Evaluator).
