Emerging Chemicals: Fentanyl

Citation:

Kaelin, L. AND L. Oudejans. Emerging Chemicals: Fentanyl. 2020 OSC Academy, Chicago, Illinois, February 24 - 28, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will provide an overview of EPA’s role in a fentanyl response and will contain the results from research that was initiated to fill select gaps identified during the development of EPA’s Fentanyl Fact Sheet for OSCs, and will be given to on-scene coordinators at the 2020 OSC Academy on fentanyl fact sheet and fentanyl remediation research

Description:

Illicit fentanyl activities that result in contamination of building materials continue to increase. Each incident creates an exposure risk to law enforcement, first responders, and remediation contractors. Remediation operations will benefit from improved knowledge on sampling & analysis and in situ neutralization options of fentanyl and its analogs on building materials. Current remediation knowledge is limited to basic chemistries of some oxidants while several commercial vendors make unverified claims regarding their oxidant products. Results from sampling and analysis efforts as well as surface decontamination tests will be presented. The results of this research will inform the EPA response community on the means to sample for, decontaminate, and clear for re-occupancy indoor environments contaminated with fentanyl.
