Impact/Purpose:

To summarize a special session on the Guidance for Product Category Rules document organized by the American Center for LCA's PCR Committee and held at the LCA XVIII conference in Fort Collins, CO in September 2018.

Description:

In 2013, an international initiative launched out of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment’s (ACLCA) PCR Committee published the Guidance for Product Category Rule Development to address the need for technically consistent product category rules (PCRs). Since then, this Guidance has been used globally both for PCR development and for education. However, it has not been updated to incorporate new developments and new questions that have arisen since its publication. At a special session held at ACLCA’s LCA XVIII conference in Fort Collins, CO in September 2018, presenters provided a background of the Guidance and examples of its use in industry and in PCR development. Following presentations, an open discussion was held on how the Guidance has served its purpose and how it might be improved. Session attendees highlighted some gaps in the Guidance, but also indicated that an appendix may be sufficient to close the gaps. A need for supporting documents (e.g., training materials) was also identified. The ACLCA PCR Committee will discuss feedback received in this session and identify the next steps to maintain the relevance and increase the utility of the PCR Guidance.
