Impact/Purpose:

A special session was held at the LCA XVIII conference titled 'Global LCA Data Access (GLAD): Toward Specifications for Data Set Interoperability" in which the history and recent progress of the GLAD initiative was presented, and a facilitated discussion was held to collect participant feedback on the value and sustainability of GLAD. This paper summarizes that session and will be submitted for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

Description:

Building the Global LCA Data Access (GLAD) network has stimulated LCA community progress on matters of data set interoperability. In 2014, the “International Forum for LCA Collaboration” initiated the GLAD network project. In the last two years the initiative focused on the creation of the initial data platform. A prototype web-based search application and application programming interface (API) permitting data search and download from five data providers was released in April 2018. The development process for this application provided a platform for stakeholder driven progress on metadata and nomenclature issues related to data set interoperability and demonstrated the technical capability to transfer LCA data sets using web services within the LCA community. The history and progress of GLAD were summarized at a special conference session to gather feedback on how GLAD can meet user needs for data interoperability and access, and how the initiative can best be sustained.
