Impact/Purpose:

Allows users to query data without programming in SQL language

Description:

NaKnowBase User Interface W. Boyes, P. Langley, B. Beach, T. Levey, H. Mortensen The continued emergence and growth of nanotechnology, including the application of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) in industry and commerce, raises the possibility of environmental releases of ENM, and the need to predict potential environmental consequences. A substantial amount of research has been published on this topic, but the information is difficult to assimilate and synthesize. A relational database (“NaKnowBase”) was developed featuring parameters relevant to the physical and chemical features of ENM and their potential actions in environmental and biological systems. The database was populated with relevant data from peer-reviewed articles published by ORD authors. The database was developed using SQL language and originally required SQL queries to select and extract data from the database. To enhance usability of the database, a front-end user interface was designed that did not require SQL language programing. The interface allows users to search and filter data using search boxes and drop-down menus rather than SQL language queries. The boxes prompt for fields in the database including parameters relevant to the source publications, materials tested, assays run, and results obtained. The user interface should facilitate the ability of users to search and extract data relevant to a variety of scientific questions. This abstract does not reflect EPA Policy
