Impact/Purpose:

The U.S. EPA works with tribes on a government-to-government relationship in protecting human health and the environment. In support of this work, EPA collaborates with various tribal partnership groups on both media-specific issues, and on general environmental science issues. The EPA National Tribal Science Council (TSC), sponsored by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) provides a forum for the interaction between Tribal and Agency representatives of mutual benefit and responsibility to work collaboratively on environmental science issues. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an update of TSC and ORD activities to the EPA Region 9 Regional Tribal Operations Committee (RTOC). The RTOC is a working committee of EPA and tribal personnel co-chaired by an EPA representative and a tribal representative. The presentation includes information on opportunities for R9 tribes to inform the agency's draft citizen science vision, and inform how ORD will implement its planned research and development activities.

Description:

This update on the Tribal Science Council for the R9 RTOC will provide an overview of the TSC and its mission, a description of ongoing collaborations with the National Tribal Toxics Council, a summary of newly funded R&D projects with tribes, and information on how R9 tribes can provide input to the EPA's draft citizen science vision, and the implementation of ORD's strategic research action plans.
