Supporting the Responders: Fentanyl Sampling and Decontamination Studies

Citation:

Oudejans, L. AND S. Willison. Supporting the Responders: Fentanyl Sampling and Decontamination Studies. To be Presented at Indiana Alliance of Hazmat Responders 2019 Indiana HazMat Conference, Lafayette,IN, November 07 - 08, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

Illicit fentanyl activities that result in contamination of building materials continue to increase. Each incident creates an exposure risk to law enforcement, first responders, and remediation contractors. Remediation operations will benefit from improved knowledge on sampling & analysis and in situ neutralization options of fentanyl and its analogs on building materials. Current remediation knowledge is limited to basic chemistries of some oxidants while several commercial vendors make unverified claims regarding their oxidant products. Results from sampling and analysis efforts as well as surface decontamination tests will be presented. The results of this research will inform the EPA response community as well as other Federal, State, Tribal and Local agencies on the means to sample for, decontaminate, and clear for re-occupancy indoor environments contaminated with fentanyl.

Description:

This presentation will provide an overview of EPA’s role in a fentanyl response and will contain the results from research that was initiated to fill select gaps identified during the development of EPA’s Fentanyl Fact Sheet for OSCs. The presentation on fentanyl remediation research will be conducted under EPA's HSRP to participants at the Indiana Alliance of Hazmat Responders (IAHMR) 2019 Indiana HazMat Conference.
