Joint USGS/USEPA Pathogens in Soils Collaboration Project and Website

Citation:

Silvestri, E. AND D. Griffin. Joint USGS/USEPA Pathogens in Soils Collaboration Project and Website. Presented at U.S. EPA International Decontamination R&D Conference, RTP, NC, May 08 - 10, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

To elucidate the prevalence of naturally occurring B.anthracis, USEPA NHSRC scientists teamed with scientists from the USGS Mineral Resources Program scientist to analyze soil samples from 4,770 sites as part of the North American Soil Geochemical Landscapes Project. USEPA and USGS scientists correlated occurrences with geochemical constituents (> 40 major and trace elements), historical outbreak data, and climate data by creating online interactive maps using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) platform. USEPA and USGS also collaborated in development of a protocol for collecting bacterial pathogens in surface soils. Finally, USGS and USEPA collaborated on development of a standardized protocol for processing different types of soils for the rapid and reliable detection of B. anthracis. These collaborative efforts are featured on a joint USGS/EPA webpage and are also described herein
