Citation:

Fisher, W. AND M. Linnenbrink. EPA Research on Fish, Wildlife and Their Habitat. Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, St. Paul, Minnesota, September 23 - 27, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation to the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is intended to inform AFWA members from across North America of the past and ongoing research in EPA that is relevant to their role in fish and wildlife conservation and protection.

Description:

The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to protect human health and the environment. To accomplish this mission, EPA develops and enforces regulations, provides grants for state environmental programs, and provides environmental information through its Office of Research and Development (ORD). The breadth of issues within EPAs responsibility is expansive. ORD categorizes the issues they investigate into six national programs: Air and Energy, Sustainable and Healthy Communities, Homeland Security, Chemical Safety for Sustainability, Human Health Risk Assessment, and Safe and Sustainable Water Resources. Example ORD research activities with relevance to protection of fish, wildlife, and their habitats are highlighted. These include ecological risk assessment of chemicals to fish and wildlife populations, water quality assessments, protection of valued resources, costs and benefits of environmental decisions, and collaborative research with community stakeholders. ORD has developed a wide range of tools, models and information potentially beneficial to fish and wildlife managers.
